Case: M777 Lightweight Howitzer

RTI supplies titanium for the M777 Field Howitzer
The Howitzer saves over 6,000 pounds of weight by making use of titanium and titanium alloys, reducing its total weight to 9,700 pounds.

The M777 A1 light weight 6 inch Howitzer, manufactured by BAE Systems, is a good example of RTI's supply chain capabilities. With a design and development period of well over 10 years, RTI was able to participate in all phases of this program for material selection, design, pre-production and finally full rate production for the US Army and Marine Corps. The system is state of the art with RTI's key titanium technologies significantly reducing weight and enabling rapid deployment to remote locations by towing or helicopter lift.

Today RTI integrates a supply basket that includes mill products, casting stock, extruded and fully machined components, all produced in-house and all delivered to the BAE Systems global supplier base. That supply base requires RTI to ship kit sets of materials to custom prints to locations from California to England while fully complying with rigorous export regulations.  The challenges faced by RTI in managing such a complex program whilst bringing in-house new services such as multi-axis, multi-spindle machining, were achieved through a committed team effort and by strengthening that team with the missing skill sets.

As we close off 2008, RTI has supplied well over 100,000 individual components to this project and are proud to be part of a program that is protecting freedom in the far corners of the world.
