While some predicted a restrained 2007 compared to a red hot 2006, no such slowdown occurred in the aerospace, defense, and energy markets that RTI serves. Revenues in 2007 increased by 24 percent over 2006 levels and the company brought on more than $4 billion in new or extended long-term agreements with Boeing, Airbus, and Lockheed Martin in both commercial and military markets.

Market Overview

Market Mix

Titanium and composite-intensive airframes, in conjunction with fuel-efficient power plants, have taken flight with Boeing's 787 Dreamliner and Airbus' A350 XWB. The long-recognized strength-to-weight ratio, outstanding corrosion resistance, and inherent thermal compatibility with aerospace composite materials of titanium make it the airframe material of choice.

New titanium-intensive airframes are selling at record rates. Each unit has higher percentages of titanium composition than its legacy counterpart, helping to drive strong demand for near net shape inputs such as RTI's hot-formed and extruded titanium product offerings. RTI's titanium expertise, near net shape technologies and state-of-the-art machining and finishing capabilities are well-aligned to today's and tomorrow's demanding customer needs.

While new commercial aerospace platforms took center stage in 2007, military aero programs continued to be an important part of our business mix, including the Lightning II (Joint Strike Fighter), F/A-22 Raptor, Eurofighter Typhoon, Rafale and A400M. In addition, 2007 was not only a year for newer military programs as stalwart legacy platforms such as the C-17, and venerable F-18, contributed to one of the most robust aerospace markets in history.  Not to be outdone by their fixed-wing brethren, the V-22 Osprey and other rotary aircraft, including related spares demand, also helped fuel the robust 2007 market.
